17 November 2016 The digital economy offers phenomenal opportunities to engage more individuals and small businesses in the global economy, but it also risks opening up new divides and inequalities unless infrastructure issues are addressed, UNCTAD Secretary-General, Mukhisa Kituyi said. Talking on the sidelines of telecommunications meeting in Bangkok Dr. Kituyi, said global trade is undergoing a revolution, driven by new information and communications technology (ICT). Against a background of sluggish global growth, the value of online trade accelerated upwards, between 2013 and 2015, from $16 trillion to $22 trillion. "ICT has a phenomenal ability to engage different pockets of production with the global economy and to raise productivity, " Dr. Kituyi said. "The Internet connects goods and markets, reduces overheads, and boosts productivity, so we see it as a great enabler to unbottle a lot of the energies that exist in different economic sectors, " he said. Dr. Kituyi said that by boosting access to economic opportunities, ICT has major potential to support achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The United Nations Conference on Trade And Development (UNCTAD) wants developing countries to take advantage of the $22. 1 trillion global ecommerce market by launching a new ecommerce initiative. Named eTrade for All, the program brings international organizations, donors, and businesses under one umbrella, easing developing country access to cutting-edge technical assistance and giving donors more options for funding. By providing new opportunities and new markets, online commerce can help generate economic opportunities, including jobs. While more than 70% of people are shopping online in Denmark, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, the case is not the same most developing countries. In Bangladesh, Ghana and Indonesia, just 2% or less of the population buy online. "A huge divide is opening between countries that are exploiting those opportunities and those that are not, " said UNCTAD Secretary General, Mukhisa Kituyi. According to UNCTAD data, business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) ecommerce respectively valued at around $19.
